Arlberg: Austria’s largest interconnected skiing area
Arlberg is one of the world’s top ski resorts with 305km of daily groomed slopes, 200km of ski routes, and 87 modern lifts in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. It is Austria’s largest interconnected ski resort—and the fifth largest in the world.
The first ski tourists to ascend the Arlberg in 1885 had to hike up the mountain, as did Hannes Schneider (no relation to the Almhof Schneiders), who founded the world’s first ski school in Langen am Arlberg in 1928 and is regarded as the godfather of modern alpine skiing. The first ski lift in Austria was built in Zürs in 1936. And a year later in 1937, the Galzigbahn showed that in the Arlberg, we don’t shy away from technical pioneering.
The Arlberg is called the “cradle of Alpine skiing”—and the pioneering days justify its name. While the Telemark turn was still taught everywhere else, Hannes Schneider was teaching the “Arlberg Technique” he developed in the late 1920s and is the standard way of skiing today.
From the cradle of Alpine skiing, the Arlberg grew into one of the world’s top ski resorts and winter holiday destinations. This is due to the fact that from day one, Arlberg has lost none of its aura for skiers. Just like then, it stands for the passion for skiing, perfectly prepared and challenging slopes, legendary backcountry, a breathtaking mountain panorama, and exceptional hospitality hardly matched in Austria or beyond.
